Hey all,
It's time to start the thread to select games for the 2011 HARP Championships. You can pick up to four games in which you want to include for this year's championship. Make sure all four games you selected belong in different genres.(so you can't have two racing games, for example) If you make the finals, the 1st game listed will be your half of the grand finals (if it wasn't picked in a previous round), so choose your best game wisely.

Last year, we had a rule that said you had to pick two games in which you didn't submit a recording. That restriction is removed for this year, mainly for purposes of fairness. (less fair for people who've submitted a ton of games vs. someone who's submitted only a couple of games)

DISALLOWED GAMES:
- Parsec (TI/99, HC2010)
- Mega Man 4 (NES/PS1, HC2010)
- Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV (Genesis, HC2010)
- Tetris Attack/Panel De Pon/Pokemon Puzzle League/Pokemon Puzzle Challenge (SNES/GB/GBC/N64/GBA, HC2010)

PETE'S SELECTIONS:
1. R.C. Pro-Am(NES) - Racing
2. Quarth - Random Mode(GB) - Puzzle
3. Rollerball(NES) - Pinball
4. Life Force(NES) - Shooter

1. Pinball Dreams - Ignition (SNES) - Pinball (would have been Amiga if on the scoreboard)
2. Congo Bongo (ColecoVision) - Arcade
3. Chuck Norris - Super Kicks (ColecoVision) - Fighter: Scrolling Beat 'Em Up
4. Incredible Wizard, The - Medium (Astrocade) - Shooter

Barthax: It's OK to use the Amiga version... but the worry here is getting multiple variations of the same game. (i.e. a ton of different CRC checks) There's no "goodtools" version for the Amiga, unfortunately...

True, but there is the CAPS project and the CAPS Distribution Initiative - the latter having the TOSEC dats.

Feel free to contact me if more details about my choices are needed...

1 - Barnstorming [!] - Hedge Hopper (Game 1)
A2600 - WolfMESS

2 - Virtua Racing - Beginner Course - Genesis - WolfMESS - Lap or Total? I think Lap is better, but I'm not sure...

3 - Kid Chameleon - Genesis - WolfMESS

4 - Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers (U) [c][!] - Super Mode Expert
Genesis - WolfMESS - "Super Mode Expert" or "Super Mode", no matter

PS.: If any problem or playback related to my 4 games above, I have these "backup" games:
5 - Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings [SNES] - Time Attack - WolfMESS
PS.: Here most of SNES games are about 72% speed on WM139! Any config tip or hardware issue? This "Time Attack" mode is a secret mode, but very short, lowest time better format (At the Player Select screen: Hold R, then: A, Left, Y, Right, X, Down, B, Up).

6 - Twin Hawk (USA) or Daisenpu (JPN) - Genesis - WolfMESS - If appliable, I suggest 2 loops maximum (it's for you MJS Wink )

Hi, just now I am reading carefully the rules Smile
I don't want to change the games, but I would like just to invert my 1~4 list to 4~1, being 1-SSF2, 2-KC, 3-VR and 4-B.
Considering the beginning is postponed 1 week, let me know if my changes are ok.

By the way, that's a "new" idea, but I would suggest to change the Grand Finals game selection rules. An inversion: I would change it to "randomize" all the remaining games (not played yet), except the games chosen by the finalists. It's just for sake of competition.

Ideas?

Ah, so if you make it to the grand final, you want to play Super Street Fighter II, then. Very good, it's done.

As for your idea, I think it's a good idea... but I think I'm going to keep it as is for this reason: for the grand finals, both players will be able to play a game they want to play... that was my thinking, anyway...

Thanks (PS.: I like SSF2, but I never played it for a competition Idea ). That's ok!
But imagine the situation if the Grand Final has Barnstorming: time based, where probably the "gap" between players would be lesser than 1 second (very low difference, considering percentage). Example the current HARP times: 33"49 and 34"47. I am not sure the exact calculation, but 2nd player would be around 97.16%... Considering the 2nd player game is score based, it would be very unbalanced... Ok, it's not directly related to the game selection rules, but related to Time Based (low gap) and Score Based games in a % scene. Just my opinion...

OK folks, I'm about to randomize the selections for this year's HARP Championship. The games will be numbered in the order received, then the order as the players wanted their games. The games will be numbered as follows:

01. R.C. Pro-Am(NES)
02. Quarth - Random Mode(GB)
03. Rollerball(NES)
04. Life Force(NES)
05. Pinball Dreams - Ignition (SNES)
06. Congo Bongo (ColecoVision)
07. Chuck Norris - Super Kicks (ColecoVision)
08. Incredible Wizard, The - Medium (Astrocade)
09. Columns (W) (REV 01) [!] (Genesis)
10. Thunder and Lightning (NES)
11. Trashman (Spectrum)
12. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (Genesis)
13. Break In (MSX)
14. The Three Dragon Story (SMS)
15. Double Dragon Advance (GBA)
16. Chou Makai-Mura (SNES)
17. Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers (U) [c][!] - Super Mode - Genesis
18. Kid Chameleon - Genesis
19. Virtua Racing - Beginner Course - Genesis
20. Barnstorming [!] - Hedge Hopper (Game 1) - A2600
21. Wec Le Mans (Spectrum)
22. Rainbow Islands (Spectrum)
23. The Pyramid (Spectrum)
24. Tapper (Spectrum)

Reminders: No more than two games from each player's list may be selected. No more than two games from the same genre may be selected until the grand finals. Finally, games from the same genre cannot be played in consecutive rounds, also until the grand finals. Any game selected that violates the above criteria will be thrown out and the next game will be used.(provided that uses the criteria, otherwise, repeat the above) We will use random.org to randomize the games, using a seed of the last two scores received from the site. In this case, those scores are 41,980 and 4,970,800... combined, the random seed will be "5012780".

The random.org number generator has generated the following with seed "5012780": (http://www.random.org/integers/?num=100&min=1&max=24&col=1&base=10&format=html&rnd=id.5012780)

Preliminary quarter-finals: Game 22 - Rainbow Islands (Spectrum) - Platform
Preliminary semi-finals: Game 3 - Rollerball (NES) - Pinball (no elimination semi-finals - those people get byes)
Elimination finals: Game 10 - Thunder and Lightning (NES) - Breakout (preliminary finalists get a break this round so their opponent is determined)
Preliminary finals: Game 21 - Wec Le Mans (Spectrum) - Racing
Game 1 - R.C. Pro Am (NES) - Racing - SKIPPED - violates same genre in consecutive rounds rule
Game 11 - Trashman (Spectrum) - ????? - but not same genre as Wec Le Mans. :)

Grand finals - if these players make it in:
Gameboy9 - R.C. Pro-Am (NES) - Racing
Barthax - Pinball Dreams (SNES) - Pinball
Gapporin - Columns (Genesis) - Puzzle
MJS - Break In (MSX) - Breakout
TRB_MetroidTeam - Super Street Fighter II - Fighting
Spaceman - The Pyramid (Spectrum) - Shooter

Hope these games are to your liking... Smile

My thoughts: A LOT of spectrum games. Please note that Spectaculator is an acceptable emulator for those games. (Make sure you record in tournament mode, entering a week code if you use this emulator!!!)

I got both lucky and unlucky at the same time... lucky that I'll play Rollerball as my first game, but unlucky with R.C. Pro-Am just getting beat out by Wec Le Mans. Sad But I'm still half-decent at Wec Le Mans on Spectrum... I got third during the 2005 Speccy Tour. But if I have to face Spaceman in the prelim finals, I might be in for a world of hurt, especially with Trashman(another Speccy game) involved... we shall see though, huh? If I somehow make it to the grand final... I should do very well in RC Pro Am... but if I know for sure that if I run into TRB_MetroidTeam... I'm dead meat, as I'm awful in Super Street Fighter II... ESPECIALLY the genesis version.

Should be a fun tournament... even with only six players involved... good luck to all! Smile
