i noticed i couldn't play back any of my gameboy
games...

WOLFMESS .136 (and maybe newer versions) would
keep telling me that the file was invalid..

i have long filesnames for replays:
----------------
rg1_mspacman_gameboy_150930_lev16_wolfmess136.inp

and a long pathname...
so i'm think the text is getting truncated:
----------------------------------------------
K:\data\games\games\emulate\mess\[input.inp]

works fine...

but this doesn't:
-------------------
K:\data\games\games\emulate\mess\inp\gameboy\[input.inp]

this was happening on software titles too, on earlier messes and i had a wolfpatch to fix it, i removed the patch because i think the long software title i had was working, i'll see if i can fix this for 139, remind me if i don't bump this thread before 139 comes out.

not sure what you mean..

the very first post hasn't changed..
i have it set up as:
==================
c:\games\emulate\mess
or
c:\games\emulate\mess\version\wolfmess144

and the input files are under
\inp

but if i have \inp\a5200 or \inp\a7800
and try to choose an input file from there
it always fails..

Your description is either perfectly accurate or remarkably ambiguous! Are your INP paths, for example, C:\inp\a5200 or are you suggesting they are C:\games\emulate\mess\version\wolfmess144\inp\a5200?

Reference for path length limitation (in case any reader is not aware): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#maxpath (paths expressed in this thread are no-where near, but always useful to have it in the back of your mind...)

both examples i gave fail.
------------------------------
c:\games\emulate\mess\inp\[file] -> works
c:\games\emulate\mess\inp\a5200\[file] -> fails
c:\games\emulate\mess\inp\[*]\[file] -> fails

c:\games\emulate\mess\version\wolfmess144\inp\[file] -> works
c:\games\emulate\mess\version\wolfmess144\inp\a5200\[file] -> fails
C:\games\emulate\mess\version\wolfmess144\inp\[*]\[file] -> fails

is there any situation where
[pathA]/[fileX] succeeds
and
[pathA]/[fileY] fails ?

then i'd like to know pathA and fileY, in pm if you like.
