GDI will be dreadfully slow, DirectDraw may be a better option for you, if indeed it is because you have a crap Intel video chipset.

Depends on what database that is used. The Amstrad CPC list is mostly GoodCPC based, but I do eventually intend to switch it to be based on the MESS softlists, which are loaded from .zip/.7z by CRC, ...
